Day 1. To the source of the Severn.

Monday 22 August

Unlike yesterday, when we had a fine period around midday, today the weather was much more consistent. It rained all day!

The steady rain, with wind, did however provide a good test for my new Macpac waterproof jacket. The breast pocket was really waterproof but in a strange way. It let rain in, an obvious weakness, but once it was in, it wouldn't let it out! There was about 1/4 of a cup of water in the pocket by the time I realised what was going on. This was the pocket where I keep my cell phone, which provides maps for navigation, and my camera for the walk!

Luckily my phone was also encased in a sealed plastic bag, a lesson I learned whilst walking the Wolds Way in similar weather.

We had a good breakfast at Cwmbiga and set off on our walk about 10am, in steady rain. It was a steady climb, at first through forest, and then up onto moorland beside the Severn. It was quite exposed on the moor and the driving rain made photography very tricky. The landscape was very reminiscent of the Pennine Way in Derbyshire with peat bogs, flagstones, and water everywhere. At times it felt like we were walking in the Severn rather than beside it.

We reached the wooden post marking the source of the Severn about midday. Our walk had begun. We about turned and set off walking down beside the Severn.

The heavy rain probably made the Severn much more noisy and impressive than it normally is so near the source but the heavy rain and wind direction made it impossible to record it for you. We saw enough to realise that the first bit of the walk, past the turn off to the Wye source, and down to the car park would be beautiful in fine weather.

From the car park we walked back up the road to Cwmbiga.

For the statisticians 15km in 4.5 hours.

The above was written before I got photos working. I've added 12 in sequence for the day.
