Day 15b. Pilot Inn to Frampton on Severn.

Tuesday 6 September.

The Pilot Inn is halfway to Frampton, so a great place to stop for lunch. We shared a cheese and onion sandwich, with salad and chips. For the last 1/2 mile to the Pilot R was talking to a Yorkshire women from Beverly. He had recognized her accent from her pronunciation of 'father' and by the Pilot had a potted life history. It is these casual conversations, with complete strangers, that make walking such an enjoyable pastime.

We left the pub by the swing bridge and rejoined the towpath (photo).   The canal was very wide at this point (photo) with extensive views to West and East (2 photos). The canal seemed as wide as the Severn but cleaner. It appeared to carry less silt.

We passed lots of rowers under instruction today and the next photo is just one example. We also passed a new rowing centre under construction, thanks to lottery money.

The Canal is 16 miles long and there are signposts every mile. The next two photographs show the two sides of one such post.

Do you remember the photograph of the high masted sailing ship? That is why the power pylons, either side of the canal, in the next photograph are so tall.

Just near the end of today's walk we passed through Saul junction a hive of boating activity.

Just before Frampton we passed a swing bridge just as it was opening. The next photo shows a barge going through. The final photo was taken from the bridge at Frampton which we crossed to get to our hotel for the next 2 days. The Bell Inn.
