Day 14a. Tewkesbury to The Red Lion.

Monday 5 September.

I forgot yesterday to show you a photo taken in Tewkesbury Abbey, so I've shown it first below. Not bad to say it's just a parish church!

We stayed the night at 'The Royal Hop Pole,' a Wetherspoon hotel. It was a good room, with a bath again, and in a listed building to boot. The second shot shows a staircase in the building. I'd hate to be a joiner working on it.

We set off at 9 am, it had been raining overnight but was clear to start with. The next photo shows Shiel heading down the road.

The sign in the next photo is  typical of many we saw today warning against elvering.

The weather deteriorated and full wet weather gear was needed for a while but it soon dried up again as shown by the clear reflection in the water in the next photograph.

We passed through a campsite and I've added a photograph of a typical holiday home lifted on stilts because of the Severn flood risk. We continued under a road bridge.

There were lots of stiles today which made the walk tricky and tiring. Some were fully impassable but usually there was an alternative gateway nearby. I've added a photo attempting a crossing. The views over the paddocks made the effort worthwhile. You still had to watch your step however when climbing off a stile. Cowpats were a constat hazard.

Just before lunch we saw the ground ahead starting to rise steeply. There were cliffs where rapid erosion was taking place. These cliffs are opposite The Red Lion pub where we had lunch. The next photograph is a copy of one in the pub showing what it is like with the Severn in flood.
