Day 14b. Red Lion to Gloucester.

Monday 5 September.

There was a sharp climb up behind the pub and the way was partially obstructed by young tree growth. We think these may be there to help  stabilize the cliff. The path turned down to the right through a gate and into a wood. The turning was not signed but there were plenty of signs in the wood telling you to keep to the path. There was also lots of new barbed wire beside the path.

The route then went out over open paddocks and was reasonably easy underfoot but the were some dodgy stiles and others completely blocked with overgrown vegetation. At least at times it was edible.

The path became overgrown again approaching Maisemore where the Severn appears to split (see photographs). The path eventually reached the road as indicated by the badly vandalised sign shown in the next photo. Luckily it bent but did not break.

We lost the Severn Way here for a bit and followed the road and the took a right turn off  onto a smaller road. We lost all signs and were using the gps to follow a tarmac drive. We were shouted at and told the path was to our right. We pointed out the lack of signage.

We took the path and it was disgusting. Full of litter. It was being used like a local dump. I've attached representitive photographs. The path did eventually reach the river and we found Severn Way signs again but it was badly overgrown with nettle and blackberry and lined with barbed wire. I've attached 3 examples. Shiel is on the path in all of them!

We eventually came to a road bridge with a lot of grafitti and from there on the path improved and by the time we passed under the railway bridges the paths were back to normal. We entered the city along Westgate passing the lovely old church shown in the last photograph.
