NSunday 4 September.
We stayed overnight at the Old Street B&B, not surprisingly in Old Street, a continuation of the High Street. We got a very friendly welcome on arrival and enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was excellent.
Sadly I forgot to photograph the B&B as when we left I found I had lost part of my rucksack harness and was preoccupied with that.
We left at a quater to ten, on an overcast morning and made our way back to the bridge over the Severn, where we took the first photograph. There is an interesting " Wallace and Gromit" like caption on the foredeck.
We started to head south beside the river and took the second photo, the view back to Upton and the Swan Hotel. We had dinner there last night.
A little further south we came across the small footbridge (shown in next photograph) on the path on the opposite bank, allowing river access to a small marina.
Probably as it was Sunday there was a lot of activity on the river. The next photograph shows 2 barges heading up river and a 'gin palace' heading down river.
We passed a 'free fishing' area on the river and a bit later what appeared to be a wharf for a quarry..
We then had a sudden feeling we might have entered a time warp. See the next photograph of the concrete building on the far bank. We thought we might be back on the Elbe at the border with East Germany.
The path started to deteriorate somewhat with lots of nettles (photos), which made going harder. We then came across the tallest stand of knot weed we've seen to date, way above Fr Barr's head. Fortunately for us, as the next photograph shows, someone had been along and trimmed it.
A little further along, just before the motorway bridge (M50) we turned to look back and give you a view to the distant hills to the north.
The motorway bridge was extremely long, presumably because of the Severn's extensive flood plane. The next photograh was taken under the bridge. The central portion, over the river, was made of steel with each end continued in concrete.
We passed lots of fishermen today, including a bailiff. If you look carefully in the next photograph of the far bank of the river you should see 4 fishermen in just this one small section
The next two photographs show the A438 bridge at Tewkesbury and possibly an old Toll house. We lost the river trail at this point, going around a water works instead of going on the river bank to the right of it. We joined the correct path near the bridge over the Avon. The photos are taken looking up river to the weir and down river to the Severn.
We arrived in Tewkesbury at 13:30, too early for our hotel (The Royal Hop Pole), so went for drinks in Costa Coffee. We had a bath in our hotel room again, great after a walk, even though it was only 11.7km.
After a rest we went to Tewkesbury Abbey. What a magnificent old building. We stayed to listen to Evensong.
